19th-century Mackenzie's Biscuit: Victorian Mahogany Shop Display Biscuit
A “Mackenzie & Mackenzie's High Class Biscuits” Victorian-Period Mahogany Trade Display Biscuit Cabinet, circa 1880
This is a rare and highly decorative late 19th-century country store biscuit display cabinet, featuring the original reverse-gilt lettering “Mackenzie & Mackenzie's High Class Biscuits” across the top. Beautifully crafted from mahogany, the cabinet features a rectangular mahogany top and three slanted display compartments, each with its original glass lift-up door, brass “compass” hinges designed to hold the doors open, and a pair of brass handles. Originally used near a shop counter to display tins and packets of biscuits, the angled interior was specifically designed to make the contents both visually appealing and easy to reach. Mackenzie & Mackenzie were prominent biscuit makers to the King, based in Edinburgh and London, and were among the most prestigious biscuit manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, making original pieces of their trade furniture exceptionally hard to find today. This Victorian example retains its brass fittings and handles, with gilded advertising in the center. The cabinet remains in excellent antique condition, showing only the normal marks and scuffs consistent with its age and honest use. A very useful and highly decorative piece of authentic trade history, it has great potential for modern use as a bookshelf, display shelf, or feature cabinet in a kitchen, pantry, shop, café, bar, or collector’s home, and represents a unique surviving example of late 19th-century advertising furniture.
