Clock "melancholic Love," Empire Period, 19th Century, Circa 1800
"Melancholic Love" Clock, Empire Period
French work from the Empire period, circa 1800
Depicts the god of love (Eros / Cupid), recognizable by the bow he holds in his right hand. Unlike his usual cheerful or mischievous depictions, here he adopts a pensive posture, lost in deep reverie, with his head resting on his left hand, symbolizing romantic melancholy or heartbreak.
The dog, a faithful companion seated to the right, looks up at the clock face, symbolizing here unwavering loyalty in the face of this melancholy.
The bas-relief (base): The gilded bronze frieze adorning the base depicts a mythological scene linked to romantic tragedy or loss (evoking the myth of the wounded Adonis or Narcissus), which reinforces the poetic theme of romantic sorrow
Gilded bronze, polished with agate
Rests on four spindles
In very good condition; the clock comes with its original pendulum and winding key.
The clock is in working order; it has just been serviced
Height: 37 cm, Width: 32 cm, Depth: 11 cm.
