Jean Commère (1920–1986) On The Banks Of The Loire
Artist: Jean Commère (1920-1986)
Jean Commère (1920–1986)
Along the Loire
Oil on canvas
50x50cm
(beautiful Louis XV-style frame)
71x71cm
Born in 1920 in Paris, Jean Commère enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1938. His career as a painter began in 1945 and was propelled forward in 1952 when he won the Othon-Friesz Grand Prize.
In the 1950s, he painted men, women, children, landscapes, and still lifes... At a time when abstraction was establishing itself as a major trend, and new, more conceptual directions were already taking shape, Jean Commère was convinced that figurative art remained relevant. He joined the painters of the Jeune Peinture group and later those of the Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps, who had been asserting their commitment to realism since 1947.
An exceptional draftsman and a watercolorist with a masterful sense of color, Jean Commère was also an accomplished painter. His favorite themes are all represented in the centennial exhibition: landscapes, intimate figures, genre scenes, bouquets of flowers… His work is flamboyant and captivating. The retrospective exhibition offers an interpretation that brings this painter’s work into the present and provides a new perspective on it: modern, powerful, and personal.
