Monogram M.p. (19th–20th Centuries) – Symbolist Portrait Of A Man | 1912, Belle époque, Montparnasse
Monogram M.P. (19th–20th centuries)
Symbolist portrait of a man withe a hat
Signed pastel, dated 1912
53 x 44 cm (image size) | 61 x 52 cm (with frame)
-
A large pastel on paper dated 1912, signed with an unidentified "M.P." monogram.
The subject, possessing the bearing of a man of letters or an artist, gazes upward with an inspired, almost visionary expression, exuding a singular and charismatic presence. The soft, vaporous handling of the pastel, the muted tones of brown, gray, and black, as well as the elegance of the silhouette, firmly place the work within the Symbolist aesthetic and sensibility preceding the First World War. It beautifully evokes the atmosphere of the artistic, literary, and bohemian circles of Montparnasse in the 1910s.
