Pedro PORTUGAL(1937–2005): Born in La Paz, Pedro Portugal left Bolivia at the age of eight for Argentina, following his mother, who had become a widow. In 1957, he enrolled at the University of Tucumán and explored all forms of art: oilpainting, sculpture, printmaking… In the early 1970s, he arrived in Europe, first to Spain, then to France, where he met a woman from Cholet who would become his wife. They settled in the Mauges region in 1972. At that time, while traveling in Italy, he used vivid colors to depict quasi-abstract subjects, sometimes headless, almost psychedelic bodies; one of his work swas exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Beginning in the 1980s,Pedro Portugal began painting in a more dreamlike style.
