Large Gilded Wooden Wall Sconce, 18th Century, Louis XV Style, Made Of Wood Gilded With Gold Leaf.
Large gilded wooden wall sconce, 18th century, Louis XV style, made of wood gilded with gold leaf and hand-carved with highly ornate acanthus leaves, volutes, flowers, and shell motifs. This exuberant, asymmetrical style, inspired by nature, is typical of 18th-century French Rococo under Louis XV; the five light arms were electrified much later.
This is a grand ceremonial piece. Its highly theatrical, deeply carved design evokes Italy—Venice or Genoa—without detracting from the fact that it is also distinctly French.
Each acanthus leaf and each flower is hand-carved with a chisel and gouge.
The central bouquet: The composition starts at the bottom and bursts upward with this large, fully bloomed flower. The craftsmanship is remarkable
