Six Engravings By Jean Lepautre (1618–1682)
Scenery plates engraved by Lepautre and published byJean Leblond (1590–1666), on Rue Saint-Denis at the Cloche d’Argent. Each engraving retains its original margins and is displayed under glass in a molded, blackened wooden frame.
Dimensions of the plates (without frame): 11 x 43 cm
Jean Lepautre or Le Pautre (1618–1682) trained under Adam Philippon, “the king’s carpenter and engineer,” whom he later accompanied to Italy. Lepautre was one of the most prolific engravers of the 17th century, with approximately 2200 prints, half of which dealt with ornamentation (architectural decorations, friezes, ceilings, vases, and ornaments of all kinds). A master of etching, his creativity and abundant output embody the decorative grandeur of the Louis XIV style. And for some historians, he is the founder of the Louis XIV style.
