Antique Savoie Muleteer Plaque With Crown Motif, Mid-19th Century

An attractive antique French brass muleteer's plaque (plaque muletière) from Savoie, decorated with a finely engraved crowned emblem incorporating a central starburst motif, banners and traditional geometric ornament.

Plaques of this type were mounted on the harnesses of mules and served both decorative and identifying functions. They formed an important part of the material culture of Alpine communities where mule transport remained essential throughout the nineteenth century.

This example retains its original hinged attachment and displays extensive hand engraving. The original owner's inscription appears to have worn away through long use, leaving the decorative elements as the principal surviving features.

The design closely resembles other Savoyard muleteer plaques of the nineteenth century and reflects the pride owners took in decorating working animals and their harness equipment.

This plaque is one of three antique muleteer plaques from the same collection currently offered for sale.

Diameter: 16 cm.

Good condition with age-related wear, patina and surface scratches consistent with long use. Inscription now largely illegible due to wear.
