Portrait Of A Lady Of High Social Standing, Attributed To Frans Van Mieris, Late 17th Century

Oil on panel depicting the portrait of a quality lady wearing an aigrette and whose elegant toilet is adorned with a precious jewel at the bodice.

Attribution to Frans Van Mieris inscribed in a cartridge at the level of the lower crosspiece of the frame.

Frans Van Mieris the Elder (1635-1681) was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, from the school of Leiden. A student of Gérard Dou, he is classified with the latter and Gabriel Metsu among the "fijnschilders" (fine painters) for his finesse of execution and his mastery of rendering materials. Illustrating mainly in portraiture and the genre scene, he draws inspiration from bourgeois and aristocratic circles as well as from working-class backgrounds. Enjoying an important reputation from his lifetime, he counted among his protectors the Archduke Leopold I, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as Cosimo III de' Medici. His two sons, Jan and Willem, who were his students, as well as his grandson Frans the Younger also followed the career of painter. His works are now exhibited in many museums, such as the Petit Palais, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
