Mercury-gilded Bronze Bishop's Candlestick
Mercury-gilded bronze "bishop’s" candlestick, Restoration period, early 19th century
Elegant handheld candlestick known as a “bishop’s” candlestick, made of finely chased bronze and gilded with mercury. It features a wide circular tray with a scalloped rim designed to catch wax, surmounted by a central cup. The handle, richly decorated with scrollwork and foliage motifs, offers a comfortable grip and attests to meticulous craftsmanship.
The original gilding, applied using the traditional mercury technique, retains a beautiful, warm, and even color. The piece is in very good condition, with no deformation or apparent restoration, and shows only slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
