Oil On Panel, *the Bedroom* By A. Coussens
Oil on panel depicting an interior—presumably a bedroom—in a traditional southern French home. The scene shows a room with weathered gray walls and simple furnishings; on the left, an open window overlooks a Provençal landscape.
On the right is a wrought-iron bed adorned with a colorful quilt; at the foot of the bed, a small rug covers the terracotta floor tiles. Nearby, a nightstand completes the furnishings.
Signed “Coussens” in the lower left corner.
On the back, the artist added the inscription “La chambre de la vieille Manon ou Hanon.”
Armand Coussens (1881–1935) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator born in the Gard department.
Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Nîmes, he lived in Paris from 1900 to 1907 before returning to settle in the Midi, where he taught and developed his body of work.
He is particularly renowned for his depictions of Provence, its landscapes, its people, and scenes of daily life.
His engravings are featured in several major public collections. His paintings are much rarer, which makes the original works particularly interesting.
