Miniature Blonde Tortoiseshell Box With Animated Landscape, 19th Century
This lovely round box is made of light-colored tortoiseshell.
The lid is adorned with a superb miniature depicting a lively landscape filled with numerous small figures, from the two fishermen in the foreground to the mule driver climbing the hill on the left.
The miniature is protected by a domed glass cover and set in a gilded metal frame.
The scene is likely inspired by the Laufen (Laufon) Birse river waterfall in the canton of Bern. Engravings on the same theme can be found online (see last photo)
There is a slight trace of moisture in the upper right corner of the miniature, which does not detract from the beauty of the landscape.
The back of the lid beneath the miniature has been re-glued.
Some minor insect damage to the mother-of-pearl.
GOOD CONDITION, Swiss, 19th century, circa 1850.
Box diameter 6.6 cm, height 1.8 cm; engraving diameter 5.2 cm
