Odiot: Large Paper Cutter/letter Opener Made Of Solid Silver And Vermeil. Late 19th Century.
A stunning silver and vermeil letter opener from the renowned Odiot house.
The silver-lined handle is decorated with an Indian woman’s mask amidst leafy scrollwork, clusters of fruit, and rocaille shells.
On the reverse, a cartouche is left blank.
The “blade” is made of vermeil.
It is hallmarked:
. Pre-1973 1st-class Minerva hallmark for 950/°° silver; also present on the handle.
. Goldsmith’s hallmark “O” with an oil lamp for Charles-Nicolas Odiot (active from 1823 to 1865) and later his son Jean-Baptiste-Gustave Odiot (active from 1865 to 1894). This is most likely a piece dating from the son’s period.
. Spelled out in full: Odiot
A magnificent, richly decorated letter opener—solid and particularly heavy. It is a high-quality piece that makes a real statement on a desk, bolstered by the prestige of the silversmith’s workshop that crafted it.
