César-auguste Detti (1847–1914) *elegant Lady With A Rose* In A Louis XV Interior.
César-Auguste Detti (1847–1914)
Elegant Woman with a Rose in a Louis XV Interior
Signed oil on panel
A very charming oil on panel by the Italian painter César-Auguste Detti, born in Spoleto in 1847 and died in Paris in 1914, an internationally renowned artist particularly sought after for his gallant scenes, his evocations of the 18th century, and his refined depictions of high society.
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Detti quickly established himself among the great genre painters of his time. Exhibited in the major European Salons, he enjoyed considerable success among the bourgeoisie and international collectors. His works are now found in numerous public and private collections and regularly appear in major auctions dedicated to Belle Époque painting.
This composition is a perfect example of the artist’s talent. An elegant young woman is depicted in a sumptuous Louis XV-inspired interior. Seated in a lavish gilded armchair, she delicately holds a flower in her hands while her dreamy gaze seems lost in thought. Beside her, an elegant carved console table holds a vase of flowers in front of a mirror, whose delicately sheer curtains lend an atmosphere of softness and intimacy.
Detti’s virtuosity is fully expressed in his exceptional treatment of fabrics. The white silk dress embroidered with flowers, draped in a gauzy veil, contrasts beautifully with the blue coat featuring rich golden motifs. The play of light on the fabrics, the finesse of the design, and the luxurious rendering of the materials attest to the technical mastery that has earned the artist his reputation.
The composition, of great elegance, evokes the refined world of the 18th century, which César-Auguste Detti was particularly fond of. The harmony of colors, the delicacy of the figure, and the richness of the setting lend this work a timeless charm.
The painting is presented in its superb period frame of wood and stucco gilded with gold leaf, which beautifully showcases this high-quality work.
A particularly decorative work by a major artist of late 19th-century Italian genre painting.
