The Children of Edward
Oil on canvas
19th century
Circa 1880
The Children of Edward is a painting by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856).
This painting depicts Edward V and the Duke of York, confined in a room in the Tower of London. The two young princes are sitting on their beds. Edward V, sickly and melancholic, dressed in black, clasps his hands, tilts his head to one side, and leans on his brother's shoulder. The latter appears more alert; he is wrapped in a flowing black velvet robe, and he holds an open book of hours, resting on his elder brother's lap, to whom he was reading, when suddenly a sinister jangling of keys caught his attention; he turns in fright towards the door, through whose hinges a ray of light filters. A small dog looks in the same direction, pricks up its ears, and waits for someone to enter. It's the assassins sent by Gloucester who are about to appear.
