Alabaster Bust—young Orientalist Woman—a. Luchini (late 19th–early 20th Century)
Artist: A. Luchini (fin Xixe - Début Xxe)
An elegant bust in alabaster, finely sculpted by the Italian artist Adolfo Luchini (Florence School).
This bust beautifully illustrates the Belle Époque’s fascination with the Orient; it exudes a sense of mystery, sensuality, and an invitation to travel.
Here, the sculptor makes use of the stone’s translucency and natural softness to bring this subject to life; the face, of great delicacy, contrasts with the technical virtuosity evident in the details of the clothing and headdress.
A work full of charm, luminous, and highly representative of the great Italian Romantic sculpture of the late 19th century. The sculptor captures with immense delicacy the fine features and mysterious gaze of this young woman. The artist’s virtuosity is fully expressed in the prodigious rendering of the exotic headdress, whose fabric texture one can almost sense.
The Orientalist theme was immensely popular in the late 19th century.
Italian sculptors reveled in it, as the exotic drapery and complex headdresses allowed them to showcase their full technical virtuosity.
