Pierre Coffinhal-laprade, Known As Laprade (1875–1931), A Series Of Eight Ink Drawings On Paper.
LAPRADE (Pierre COFFINHAL-LAPRADE, known as), painter and engraver born in Narbonne (Aude) on July 25, 1875, died in Fontenay-aux-Roses on December 23, 1931 (École des Beaux-Arts).
After beginning his artistic studies in Bourdelle’s studio in Montauban, Pierre Laprade moved to Paris in 1892 to attend classes at the École des Beaux-Arts. He rarely attended classes, preferring instead to copy the masterpieces on display at the Louvre. In 1901, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants, just as Impressionism was fading from the art scene. It was Ambroise Vollard who brought him to the attention of the general public by purchasing his entire studio collection. He held numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, particularly in Italy, and enjoyed resounding success, notably in 1926 during his shows at the Bernheim-Jeune and Katia Granoff galleries. He exhibited regularly at the Salons d’Automne and the Salons des Tuileries.
Several French museums hold works by him, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
This very lovely and touching series of eight ink drawings on paper depicting his son was created in 1911 and 1912. The artist’s studio stamp appears on the drawing in the lower right corner and on the back of the frame.
Provenance: from the family of the artist Pierre Laprade, passed down through the generations.
