3 Watercolor Miniatures On Vellum, Depicting Three Members Of The Same Family
three miniatures on vellum, painted in watercolor, depicting three members of the same family circa 1805–1820:
- a young man in a black coat and a high Empire-style collar,
- an elderly woman in a white bonnet and a red shawl,
- a young woman in a white Empire-style dress.
The frames are Restoration / Charles X-era frames, made of blackened wood with gilded trim.
The inscriptions on the backNotably include:
- “Jeanne Cugnier”
- “Madame Clerget”
- “ mother of Jacques Toussaint Clerget”
- “this portrait was painted in 1811”
and on the others:
- “Jacques Toussaint Clerget”
- “ A. Gay”
These old annotations provide genuine family provenance, which is a significant advantage.
The costumes, technique, frames, and backing papers are consistent with a work created around 1810–1815.
