Aline Boisset – Portrait Of An Auvergne Pointer – Pastel – 20th Century
Aline BOISSET (1917–1983)
Portrait of an Auvergne Braque
Dry pastel on paper, signed lower right “A. Boisset”
29 × 20 cm — 43 × 33 cm with frame (modern cream-colored molding)
A beautiful portrait of an Auvergne Braque, executed in dry pastel on brown-gray paper. The artist skillfully made use of the paper’s warm color, which she left visible in places: it serves as a background and highlights the white areas of the coat, enhanced by a few touches of white and gray.
The dog is depicted from the front, looking directly at the viewer. The head, a deep black, immediately catches the eye, with the breed’s characteristic white stripe running from the forehead down to the muzzle. The amber eyes, rendered with great accuracy, give the animal an attentive and somewhat melancholic expression. The chest and neck are white, speckled with small black and gray spots (the “speckled” coat characteristic of the Braque d’Auvergne). Here we sense a free and swift hand, which contrasts with the smoother, more meticulous rendering of the muzzle.
The linework is understated and confident. It is closer to a study from life than to a highly polished portrait, and that is precisely what makes this artist so charming: with just a few strokes, she manages to capture the dog’s character and the expression in its eyes.
Very good overall condition. The pastel is stable, the colors are fresh, with no damage or noticeable fading. Presented under glass in a modern frame with a cream-colored moldings and a mat, ready to hang.
The Artist
Aline Boisset (1917–1983) was a 20th-century French animal painter associated with the Lyon School. Documentation about her remains scarce: there is no detailed biographical entry available, but her work regularly reappears on the art market, consisting largely of portraits of dogs, executed in dry pastel or gouache on paper. There are also a few cats. These portraits, which always focus on the animal’s head and the expression in its eyes, demonstrate a genuine sensitivity toward animals and a perfect mastery of pastel.
