A Rare Empire-period Four-column Secretary Desk In Flamed Mahogany With Gilded Bronze Fittings
Rare Empire-period four-column secretary desk in flamed mahogany with gilded bronze fittings
Impressive flamed mahogany secretary desk with a drop-leaf top that opens via a belt drawer; the drop-leaf reveals an interior fully fitted with compartments, drawers, and secret compartments, as well as three drawers in the lower section.
The front features a spectacular fern-leaf veneer arranged in butterfly wings, enhanced by rich ornamentation of chiseled gilded bronze.
The drop-down panel is centered by an elegant winged figure holding a laurel wreath, a symbol of Victory.
The side posts are adorned with finely chiseled bronze capitals, while the lower crossbar features elaborate decoration with a mascaron and foliage motifs.
The interior, preserved in its entirety, reveals a refined design consisting of arched niches, six side drawers, a secret central compartment, and a writing desk covered in green leather with gold trim and small metal studs.
The piece rests on carved claw feet and is topped with a molded black marble slab.
Thanks to the exceptional quality of its mahogany, the richness of its bronze fittings, and the presence of its original interior fittings, this secretary desk stands as a remarkable example of early 19th-century French furniture.
