émile Gallé, “lakeside Landscape” Vase With Sunset Fence, 1900, Nancy
Gallé Vase with a Lakeside Landscape in the Art Nouveau “Barrière” Style
A beautiful Gallé-signed double-walled glass vase, featuring an acid-etched design of a lakeside landscape in the “Barrière” style.
The vase has an ovoid, bulbous shape, slightly flattened, with a short cylindrical neck. The continuous design depicts a scene of a tree-lined shore, with tall trees in the foreground, a fence at the water’s edge, a luminous reflection on a river or lake, and a landscape background in nuanced shades of green, brown, orange-pink, and yellow.
The upper section, in an orange-pink hue, evokes the light of late afternoon or a sunset sky. The brown design stands out against the green and opaline background, lending the composition a beautiful sense of depth. The fence visible in the landscape links the design to the well-known repertoire of “lake landscapes with a fence” by Établissements Gallé.
Gallé signature in the design, Art Nouveau, circa 1904–1936, Établissements Gallé.
