Object description :

"Large Plaster Workshop Sculpture Discobolus Antique Decor 155cm 19th Olympus Games "
The Discobolus - Large plaster cast from the Beaux Arts workshop, late 19th - early 20th century
Impressive male statue after Antiquity, of exceptional size (155 × 100 × 40 cm), in the round on a rectangular base. Spectacular presence for a neoclassical decoration or a contemporary interior.

Good print after the Antique, taking up the entire corpus of Greco-Roman sculpture: The spiral twist of the bust, the rolling of the shoulders and the outstretched supporting leg refer to the type of Myron, known from Roman marbles.

The piece was used for the study of proportions and movement in art schools. Complete models with right arms are well documented in the collections of casts (Parisian workshops – École/Beaux-Arts, RMN–Grand Palais – and Musée des Moulages de Montpellier), which sheds light on the academic use and the diffusion of this canon.

White patinated plaster, surface with workshop wear: flaking, old repairs, the plaster was probably cut into two parts and then reworked with plaster, occasional micro-cracks without apparent structural fragility. Missing the lower right arm, the fingers of the left hand, compatible accidents of use with a long teaching service. Very readable anatomical reading (pectorals, obliques, quadriceps, shoulder blades). Plaster base with marks and gaps. Stable piece of approximately 80 kilos.

By its scale and its dynamics, the model dialogues as well with classical woodwork as with a minimal or neoclassical scenography. Plausible workshop attribution: Parisian molding workshop (School/Fine Arts, RMN circuits) or Museum of Molds of Montpellier, active in the diffusion of large models after the Antique at the end of the 19th century.

Delivery by obligatory specialized carrier, the sculpture is stored on the ground floor of a house accessible for a 20m3.
