Bresse Clock In Veneered And Inlaid Wood, Comtois Movement 18th Century
Bressane clock in veneered and inlaid wood, Comtois-type movement, late 18th century - early 19th century
Important Bresse clock of fine presence, in veneered and inlaid wood, featuring a particularly characteristic slender, violin-like silhouette. The tall, narrow sheath is distinguished by its supple lines, brightly flamed veneer decoration, herringbone fillets and geometric reserves, which elegantly enliven the front. The bulging middle section, the inlaid lens and the glazed top cap all contribute to this refined regional aesthetic, more singular and edgy than a classic Franc-Comtoise comtoise.
The set can be used in a variety of ways.
The set can be traced back to the tradition of Bresse clocks, where a very typical regional case receives a Comtois-type movement. The white enamelled dial with black Roman numerals, punctuated with five-in-five-minute indications, is surmounted by a gilded brass openwork pediment adorned with an anthropomorphic radiant sun, framed by rocaille motifs. The cut-out hands, with their star motif, further enhance the decorative character of the piece. The ensemble, in both its formal language and its presence, is plausibly situated at the hinge between the 18th and 19th centuries.
.The case features beautiful veneer work, with spectacular veining, wide speckled and flamed panels framed by contrasting fillets. This lively decoration gives the clock a strong personality and real ornamental quality, while testifying to meticulous regional craftsmanship. The glazed upper facade, housed beneath an arched crown, happily complements this vertical architecture.
Condition to report with precision: the enameled dial shows numerous cracks, chips and accidents, particularly around the periphery and around the winding apertures. The brass pediment shows wear and minor alterations. The case shows signs of use, surface wear, minor accidents, cracks and localized lifting of the veneer. The dial and movement appear to have been removed from the photographs; the whole unit will therefore need to be inspected, reassembled and probably overhauled. This piece is thus to be considered a beautiful antique clock of character, in need of restoration or refurbishment, but retaining a remarkable decorative presence.
Very beautiful piece of French regional decor, at once elegant, atypical and authentic in its expression, ideal for lovers of antique clocks, quality provincial furniture or characterful interiors.
