Isokon Dining Table By Marcel Breuer, England, Circa 1936
Artist: Marcel Breuer
Designed in 1936 by Hungarian architect and designer Marcel Breuer for the London-based company Isokon, the B.T.3 table was originally intended for the Isokon building’s restaurant, the Isobar. Made of molded birch plywood with walnut veneer on the legs, it stands out for its remarkable lightness, structural strength, and ingenious construction. The rectangular tabletop features two long sides curved at right angles, creating both optimal rigidity and a rounded edge that is pleasant to the touch. The T-shaped base consists of two curved elements joined at an angle, forming a reinforcing rib visible along its entire height. This design, conceived entirely for mass production, reflects Breuer’s modernist approach to exploring laminated wood—a technique he discovered in London through Isokon.Edition: Isokon, circa 1936.
