Louis XVI-style Sideboard With Drop-down Doors, 18th Century
An 18th-century drop-front sideboard, made during the late Dutch Louis XVI period, circa 1790–1800.
This drop-front sideboard is made of oak and mahogany, covered with veneers of satinwood, speckled maple, and mahogany. It also features a wide variety of details and moldings in Bahia rosewood, ebony, rosewood, amaranth, boxwood, and/or holly.
The front is adorned with two narrow lacquered panels and one wide lacquered panel depicting Oriental figures, buildings, and landscapes. The long surfaces of the diagonal side posts are lacquered black, while the other surfaces are veneered with ebony.
The lacquered panels feature the expected crackle finish and worn appearance.
The fold-down tabletop incorporates two compartments for glasses and plates. The drawers on either side can be pulled out to expand the work surface. The dovetail-jointed drawers feature sliding mahogany lids, beneath which is a compartment lined with green fabric for storing cutlery, napkin rings, candles, etc.
Behind the central door, which pivots on its original hinges, is a single shelf.
The folding sideboard rests on square legs with conical tips, featuring a bulge at the top and a small spherical brass foot at the bottom.
The oval brass locks on the door and drawers are adorned with, among other things, beaded borders, small bows, and garlands.
The locks are original and operate with a key.
The solid oak back panel is secured with hand-forged square nails.
The piece shows, here and there, careful restoration work on the veneer, as well as normal and subtle signs of wear consistent with its age.
Dimensions: 100H x 127L x 56P
Dimensions when fully open:
Height: 165 cm, Width: 214 cm, Depth: 56.5 cm
