Antique Italian Silver Chalice With Gilded Cup. Italy, Circa 1820
Antique Italian silver chalice, made around 1820, which immediately stands out for its elegance and for the richness of its ornamental work. It is a well proportioned piece, with a very balanced silhouette and a clear liturgical presence, one of those that gains a great deal in the hand. The combination between the white silver on the exterior and the gilded interior of the cup creates a very attractive contrast and reinforces its careful and solemn appearance. From the first glance it conveys quality.
The base presents a lively and undulating profile, with rocaille decoration and late Baroque taste scrolls that give a great deal of life to the whole. That same ornamental language appears on the knop and on the sub-cup, creating visual continuity. On the sub-cup there are also vine and grape motifs, a very appropriate Eucharistic repertoire for this type of religious silverwork, which adds iconographic interest without excessively overloading the piece. The cup maintains an interior in gilded silver of very good colour, with a gilding that looks especially well and preserves a clean and very striking appearance. All this gives the chalice relief, depth and brilliance, but without losing the sobriety appropriate for a piece intended for worship.
On the cup and on the base, hallmarks can be seen, which adds a further point of interest and confidence within the whole. The punches are not completely clear, but their presence remains visible. The general condition is very good. No important defects are observed that detract from the piece and it maintains an honest, elegant presentation, ready to continue fulfilling its function. The interior gilding also preserves a very good appearance, something important in a chalice of this period and use.
This is one of those chalices that attracts attention from the very first moment because of the quality of its goldsmith work, the richness of its decoration and the elegance of the interior gilding of the cup, which provides an especially warm and solemn presence. It is a piece with a great deal of personality, well proportioned and very pleasant visually, both in the hand and on the altar. The decoration of rocailles, scrolls and vine and grape motifs gives it movement and depth, achieving a very decorative whole without losing the sobriety proper to a fine antique liturgical piece.
In addition to its artistic appeal, it is in a very good state of preservation, ready to continue being used with complete dignity in worship. For that reason it may be an excellent choice for a priest, for an ordination gift or for someone seeking an authentic antique chalice with presence. It also fits perfectly into a serious collection of sacred art or Italian religious silverwork, thanks to its quality, its balanced aesthetic and the nobility of its materials.
Measurements: height 23.3 cm (9.17 in), diameter of the cup 8 cm (3.15 in), diameter of the base 12.5 cm (4.92 in). Weight: 350 g. (12.35 oz.)
