The sculpture depicts Guanyin (Sanskrit: the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara). Guanyin is the bodhisattva who embodies compassion; her name means “to observe sounds,” that is, to listen to people’s pleas.
The goddess of mercy is depicted wearing a long robe adorned with decorative necklaces. She raises her hands to chest level and presses her palms together—a gesture of offering or presenting a gift—typical of depictions of the bodhisattva Guanyin, symbolizing her willingness to provide help and compassion.
