Ancient Lekythos, Greece, Classical Period (500 B.c.) - Attic Pottery/terracotta
Attic
red-ground lekythos with black-figure decoration
Ancient
Greece
475–450 BC
This Attic terracotta lekythos, dating to circa 500 BC,
exemplifies the refinement of Greek pottery at the transition between
the Archaic and Classical periods. Resting on a ring foot partially
covered in black glaze, the body is decorated with a series of finely
executed stylised palmettes rendered with remarkable precision. The
shoulder is adorned with a radiating motif characteristic of Attic
production of this period, creating a dynamic transition towards the
neck, which is now partially preserved. The surface patina, along
with minor wear and traces of long burial, lends the object an
authentic and particularly evocative presence.
Produced in the workshops of Attica, this lekythos belongs to a
class of vessels intended for the storage of perfumed oils, used both
in daily life and in ritual contexts. At the dawn of the 5th century
BC, as the Greek world underwent profound artistic and cultural
change, Athenian potters developed an increasingly sophisticated
visual language. A remarkable testimony to this tradition, the
present example embodies the technical excellence and refined
aesthetic sensibility that made Attic pottery one of the most
celebrated expressions of ancient Greek art.
