Description

The painting depicts a hunting scene unfolding amid lush vegetation. The composition is structured around a central tree trunk that separates two groups of figures, arranged along a diagonal axis running from the right side of the painting towards its lower left corner. The group of figures in the foreground, highlighted by the trees that frame it, forms the focal point of the composition: a soft light, seemingly breaking through the clouds, illuminates the protagonists and accentuates the brilliance of the white horse and its rider dressed in red. The figure seen from behind, leaning against a tree on the left side of the composition, acts as a repoussoir, enhancing the dynamism of the scene. While the brown and green tones that dominate the pictorial space are enlivened by touches of colour in the riders’ attire, considerable space is devoted to the sky, whose luminous quality serves to brighten the composition.

Condition

The painting is in very good display condition. The wooden frame bears a plaque inscribed with the name “Wouverman.” The support is slightly warped, and a network of age-related craquelure, which does not interfere with the readability of the composition, is visible across the entire surface of the painting. The colours, moderately muted by an old varnish, remain clearly discernible. The paint layer is well preserved. Under raking light, the varnish appears glossy, and attractive impasto passages can be observed, particularly in the central tree. On the reverse, an old handwritten note—probably written in a Dutch dialect and partially illegible—includes a date beginning with “16...”.

Under UV light, minor restorations are visible in the vegetation, as well as in the riders in the background and the two standing figures in the lower left section of the painting
