19th-century Louis XVI Drop-leaf Desk
LOUIS XVI FLAP SECRETARY
Paris, Faubourg Saint-Antoine, circa 1880–1900
A rare and elegant high-quality drop-leaf secretary desk, crafted in the Louis XVI style by a Parisian workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine at the end of the 19th century.
This remarkable piece features rich geometric marquetry with a design of lozenges and small flowers, crafted from precious woods and extending across the front and sides, reflecting a particularly meticulous level of craftsmanship. The harmonious proportions of the piece are accentuated by an abundance of chiseled and gilded bronze fittings, including friezes, corner finials, rosettes, frames, feet, and lock plates—more than forty bronze elements adorning the cabinet.
The top is crowned with a superb molded polychrome breccia marble, perfectly matched to the decorative richness of the piece.
The drop-down panel reveals an elegant interior entirely lined with precious wood, featuring six drawers and several storage compartments. The cabinet also contains a secret drawer as well as a built-in, lockable safe, a refined feature designed for storing documents, jewelry, or valuables.
Given the quality of its marquetry, the prominence of its bronze fittings, the presence of its comprehensive interior fittings, and its excellent state of preservation, this secretary desk ranks among the fine Parisian productions of the late 19th century inspired by the masterpieces of Louis XVI cabinetmaking.
