Mid-19th century

France, Massif Central

A rare puzzle entirely carved from wood, preserved as its upper fragment. Much more than just a cane top, this object presents itself as a true folk tale carved into the wood, a silent witness to a world that has since vanished.

The piece is adorned with a remarkable narrative decoration composed of figures carved in relief, separated by rings bearing various inscriptions. Each figure seems to embody a character, a memory, or an episode whose exact meaning has gradually been lost over time.

The handle takes the powerful form of a hand clasping a sphere, a symbol of authority, mastery, or destiny. Beneath it appears the inscription “LEYRIS THÉOPHILE,” accompanied by a rosette. This name, likely that of the owner, the patron, or a central figure in the story, lends the object a deeply human and personal dimension.

Further down, two men are depicted in a confrontational stance, as if frozen in the moment before a quarrel or a challenge. A ring bears the inscription “BRUTUS ET BOMBE.” Further on, an elegant figure wearing a top hat lies on the ground, while a woman holding her reticule appears to be watching the scene. These figures, now silent, nevertheless continue to raise countless questions.

The ensemble evokes a miniature folk theater where memories, local figures, literary allusions, and the sculptor’s imagination intertwine. Behind each face likely lies a story that time has erased, yet whose poignant presence still endures.

The sculpture features a beautiful antique patina and numerous signs of wear that fully contribute to its authenticity. The shaft of the cane is missing, but the preserved fragment alone possesses the expressive power of a complete work.

A rare piece, at the intersection of folk art, rural memory, and narrative sculpture.
