Madonna And Child, In Walnut, Dating From Around 1420–1450
Probably from Utrecht (Netherlands)
It rests on architectural arches, a tradition typical of sculptures from this region. Identical examples exist in bronze and terracotta. This sculpture is finely carved, with beautiful details and traces of polychromy. Three round cavities were intended to hold gemstones or relics.
The sculpture measures approximately 40 cm, including the crown (which is not original). It shows some old damage at the base, and Jesus’s foot is missing. Nevertheless, it is a rare and remarkable 15th-century sculpture.
