Virgin And Child, 17th Century
Virgin and Child, Renaissance. Maria has a slim waist and seems to be moving forward. The faces are charming and the dresses are sculpted down to the smallest detail. The Virgin is missing her right hand and the Child is missing both hands. The sculpture measures 6.25 inches tall and is carved from oak. The polychromy is original. Southern Netherlands circa 1600. The base is more recent and has a layer of black lacquer with silver bands. A silver application was applied to the vase-shaped base containing the cross surrounded by branches with leaves.
