Dip Net Fishermen ( 1973 )
CHEVOLLEAU, Jean
born November 18, 1924, in La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée, France; 1945–1950, École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Souverbie* and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière*, under Friesz*;
1948–1960, taught in Paris; 1996, died on November 1 in La Roche-sur-Yon. Painter.
A long-standing commitment to a particular technique: vivid splashes of color, dominated by blue, rendered in geometric forms and juxtaposed with bursts of yellow and red; light emerges from the lightening of tones. The figurative element is there, lost in the proliferation of patches and the shimmering of colors, further disrupted by the fact that a single motif is arbitrarily segmented into different colors, solely to serve the flickering effect. His rare portraits employ the same technique, but in a more concentrated form; they stem from Villon* without the softening gradients and pastel colors intervening. Most of his canvases are devoted to landscape, still life, and the nude. He belongs to a post-Cubist movement, though he rejects its palette in favor of colors that sing and please.
Exhibitions: 1950, 1956, Reno Bistro, Puteaux (P); 1957, Bowink Los Angeles (P); 1961, 1981, Camille Renault, Paris (P); 1991, Jean-Paul Villain, Paris (P).
RETROSPECTIVE: 2000, City Hall of the 15th arrondissement, Paris.
