19th-century Boulle Wall Clock

We are delighted to present this magnificent wall clock, a superb example of 18th-century French craftsmanship, consisting of two distinct parts: the clock case itself and its matching wall bracket. This piece is a testament to the exuberant and asymmetrical beauty of the Rococo style (Louis XV period), demonstrating unparalleled mastery in design and execution.

The Remarkable Violin-Shaped Case and Gilded Bronze Ornaments: The curved case of the clock is superbly shaped like a violin body, a highly distinctive and elegant form that sets this wall clock apart. The case rests on four S-shaped feet, wrapped in finely detailed gilded bronze, which are gracefully connected to the front and back of the case by a frieze of ornate gilded bronze volutes. The body of the case is made of blackened wood on the lower and upper closed sides, offering a striking contrast to the shiny gilded elements.

The front of the case features a large window, also in the distinctive shape of a violin body. The upper part of this window elegantly houses the clock’s drum, while the lower section provides an unobstructed view of a richly decorated panel. The entire front of the case, along its outer perimeter and the edge of the window, is sumptuously framed by gilded bronze mounts. Among these, the most striking are the prominent classical mask at the top and two smaller masks mounted symmetrically on either side, adding a touch of allegorical grandeur.

The Dial: A Masterpiece of Horology:The large, intricate dial is a study in precision and artistry. It features an outer ring with Roman numerals for the hours, an inner ring with Arabic numerals for the minutes, and even smaller numerals inside, allowing for precise measurement of time. The center of the dial is richly decorated, indicating the exceptional quality of its movement.

A High Point of Rococo Design and Craftsmanship:This cartel, with its dynamic curves, luxurious materials, and intricate details, embodies the Louis XV style. It combines sculptural elements with precise horology, reflecting the era’s pursuit of graceful asymmetry, lively ornamentation, and technical excellence. Such a piece would have been a prized possession in the most fashionable Parisian salons, designed to impress and delight.
