18th Boulle Wall Clock

Royal Antique is proud to present this striking mantel clock, a refined example of the Empire style, a period characterized by its grandeur and inspiration drawn from classical antiquity. This timepiece demonstrates a masterful combination of materials and exceptional craftsmanship, resulting in a piece that is both visually stunning and aesthetically versatile.

Design and Materials:

  • Harmonious Combination of Materials: The clock features a striking combination of noble materials, including luminous white marble (possibly alabaster or griotte claire marble) and richly decorated gilt bronze.

  • Architectural Portico Form: The clock adopts a classical architectural portico form, with a central circular clock face suspended between two massive and flared pedestals. These white marble pedestals are adorned with very rich gilt bronze mounts, featuring large masks of lions or classical figures with animal skins, surrounded by scrolling foliage. Each pedestal is surmounted by elegant urns, flanked by small secondary dials or circular ornaments, and crowned with classical finials.

  • Dial and Surround: The white enamel dial, typical of Empire clocks, displays Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. It is framed by a sumptuous gilt bronze surround, adorned with a laurel frieze and classical motifs. The dial is also signed, visibly "Sequeau à Paris".

  • Radiant Pendulum: The pendulum, designed as a radiant sunburst, is visible below the dial, suspended by gilt bronze garlands and draperies, adding a kinetic and symbolic element to the ensemble.

  • Ornate Base: The clock rests on a rectangular white marble base, richly decorated with a continuous frieze of classical motifs, including scrolling foliage and a central floral rosette. The base is supported by gilt bronze bun feet, reinforcing the classical and luxurious aesthetic.

  • Crowning Element: The top of the clock is crowned by a central urn in marble and gilt bronze, adorned with floral motifs and a stylized leaf arrangement, emphasizing the grandeur of the composition.

Historical Context and Decorative Impact:

This clock is a valuable addition to any discerning collector's home, bringing a touch of historical elegance and sophistication to any interior. It is a superb representation of Empire period art, blending classical ideals with exquisite craftsmanship. It perfectly embodies the nobility and balance characteristic of this period, where decorative objects were designed to reflect power and Neoclassical taste.
