Vase Decorated With Dragons, Japan, Meiji Era (1868–1912)
An imposing chiseled bronze urn. The upper part is adorned with a dragon in the round, coiling around the neck of the vase amid swirling clouds. The body of the vase is covered with a relief depicting a scene of birds among the branches of a flowering plum tree (ume)—a motif symbolizing rebirth and longevity. In the lower section, two turtles (minogame) are depicted amidst the waves—a traditional symbol of happiness and long life.
