19th-century Opium Pipe Lamp, China Or Vietnam, Made Of Crystal, Copper, And Paktong.
Rare opium pipe lamp, late 19th century, of Chinese or Vietnamese origin.
The finely openwork octagonal base, as well as the reservoir, are made of copper and paktong, an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc, also known as "white copper" or "nickel silver" in Europe, with silvery highlights...
A brass "chimney" tube was part of the object; it appears to have been added later, but I do not know for what purpose...
The crystal bell is made from an old large drinking glass, with its stem removed, hence the small chips surrounding the central hole; this repurposing was common at the time for this type of object.
Very good overall condition and in working order; note a few chips in an upper openwork section of the base (see photos), and a later "fastening" of the reservoir with a screw, perhaps to compensate for a defective solder joint (?).
Height = 15 cm; width x length = 12 cm
Weight = 685 grams
Extremely careful shipping at additional cost.
