Archaic Chinese Jade "bi" Disc
Archaic Chinese jade "bi" disc
This object is a calcified jade "bi" disc mounted on an iron base
It is a ceremonial jade object symbolizing the immensity of the sky (Heaven); the central hole represents the center of the universe
Placed in elite tombs to protect souls, it was used during prayers to venerate supreme deities.
Underground burial altered the stone's mineral composition; the surface became opaque and bone-white. Erosion has created rich brown and green textures and marbled patterns.
Probably from the Zhou period (1046 BC to 256 BC)
The diameter of the disk is 30 cm.
The base measures 31.5 cm wide, 5 cm deep and 23.5 cm high.
The overall height is 40 cm.
