A self-taught animal sculptor, he is considered to be a sculptor "of movement and feeling", studying animals at the Antwerp zoo and in circus menagerie, where he drew much of his inspiration.He created monumental works for major international exhibitions, the best-known of which is his Roaring Lion in the Parc Malou in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, opposite Boulevard de la Woluwe, commissioned for the 1958 Brussels World Fair.He exhibited in Belgium, France, Italy and the United States, winning various awards including the Chapman Sculpture Prize in 1969 and the Prix de la Sculpture Européenne des Arts in 1972.His works can be found in several Belgian museums: in Ixelles (Playing Bear), Saint-Gilles (Sitting Tiger Growling), Mechelen (Outrich from the Somali Islands), Liège (Fifteen-day-old foal licking itself), Tervuren Park (Lying hinds), the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Antwerp and Brussels, Ghent, Tournai, etc., as well as many foreign museums. But also in many foreign museums: Paris (Musée d'Orsay), Lisbon, Oslo, Buenos Aires, Riga, Tallinn, Cairo, Mexico City, etc.
