"Rare Greek Style Art Deco Vase Signed By Emile Lombart"
Rare sandstone vase from the Saint Guillain factory. Saint-Ghislain. Its ceramics section was led by a remarkable technician, but most of whose career dates back to before 1914, EMILE LOMBART. This master ceramicist directs his students towards the search for new materials; for example stoneware, earthenware and porcelain, and towards enamels, such as flames. For his part, MARIUS RENARD, who will direct the school, is interested in the decor. But an important political career will soon absorb him entirely. The collaboration of E. Lombart and Mr. Renard produced beautiful results, some of which stood out with honor at the Paris exhibition in 1925. The beneficial role of the Saint-Ghislain school unfortunately does not hide its shortcomings. There is, in fact, no search for new forms adapted to the decor. This, sometimes very beautiful, is influenced by contemporary trends in cubism or constructivism. But the students do not understand the need for it and only see it as a fashion that can be adapted to any room.
