Henry Valentine Miller was an American novelist and essayist born on December 26, 1891, in New York City and died on June 7, 1980, in Pacific Palisades, California.
He is known for breaking with existing literary forms, developing a new type of semi-autobiographical novel that blends character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, explicit language, sex, surrealist free association, and mysticism. His most characteristic works in this regard are *Tropic of Cancer*, *Black Spring*, *Tropic of Capricorn*, and the *Crucifixion in Pink* trilogy, which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris (and which were all banned in the United States until 1961). He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors and gouaches. Quotes available upon request for international shipping.
