Relic Of Saint John Of The Cross With Authentic, Vienna, 1895
Theca reliquary in round silver-plated metal, approx. 3 cm in diameter, containing a bone relic of St. John of the Cross ("Ex ossibus S. Joannis a Cruce Conf."), presented under glass. The relic is set against a red silk background and surrounded by an ornamentally decorated openwork frame. The arms of the Carmelite Order appear above the relic, in reference to the saint's religious affiliation. The reverse retains its original ecclesiastical seal with its closing ties. Accompanied by its original ecclesiastical seal in Latin, issued in Vienna on December 22, 1895 under the authority of Prince-Archbishop Eduard Angerer. Document with printed archiepiscopal coat of arms, handwritten inscriptions, signatures and embossed seal.
Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591) ranks, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, among the leading reformers of the Carmelite Order. A mystic, reformer and Doctor of the Church, he is one of the great personalities of 16th-century Catholic spirituality.
