Two-headed Shamanic Bench - Tukano Indians, Amazonas State, Northwest Brazil
TWO-HEADED SHAMANIC BENCH
Tukano Indians, Amazonas State, North-West Brazil
Wood and pigments
H: 28; W: 39; L: 63 cm
(restored legs)
Shamans had several spiritual guides.
Thus, this shamanic bench combines two elements: firstly, it likely depicts the two-headed Muan bird – it is said that this mythical owl resides in the thirteenth and highest stratum of the sky. Carved with its wings spread to form the seat, its legs are solid for greater stability.
It is the decoration of symbols arranged in a cartouche painted with genipap on the seat that symbolises the second of the auxiliary spirits: the jaguar.
Provenance:
- Former collection of Joao Americo Peret, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- Former American private collection.
