Steel And Gold 'kulah Khud' Helmet - Indo/persia - 19th Century
Elegant and refined, this 19th-century Indo-Persian Kulah Khud is made of forged steel and richly decorated with engraved and gold-inlaid decoration using the traditional koftgari technique. The hemispherical cap, divided into ribbed panels, is entirely decorated with fine plant and arabesque motifs, punctuated by medallions and stylized stars.
The helmet is fitted with a riveted chainmail aventail, designed to protect the nape of the neck and sides of the face, while the front retains its articulated nasal, characteristic of Persian and Indian helmets of this period. At the top is a high tubular egret holder, complemented by two side supports designed to hold feathers or ceremonial plumes. The red feathers shown in the photographs underline the prestigious, martial character of the ensemble.
Beyond its defensive function, this piece testifies to the remarkable craftsmanship of armorers in India and Persia, where high-ranking arms and armor were often treated as veritable works of art.
