Japanese Cane With Monkeys.
Japanese cane carved from a single piece of wood during the XIXᵉ century. The shaft is adorned with monkeys treated in slight relief.
The quality of this piece lies above all in its monoxyle execution: handle, shaft and decoration have been carved entirely from a single piece of wood, without any assembly. In Japanese tradition, the monkey is an ancient motif associated with protection, wisdom and good fortune. This cane is a fine example of the art of woodcarving during the Meiji period.
