Antique Russian Caucasian Rug
A fully hand-knotted wool rug featuring a vibrant, geometric, and multicolored design.
The knotting structure, the brilliance of the color palette, and the stylization of the motifs are characteristic of traditional work from the North Caucasus region, likely the Kazak/Dagestan area, intended for the Russian market.
- Hand-knotted wool (velvet). Asymmetrical Senneh-style knotting, typical of Russian Caucasian workshops.
- Warp and weft in natural fibers.
- Traditional vegetable dyes (madder, indigo, reseda, cochineal). Vibrant color palette:
The combination of indigo blue, madder orange, reseda yellow, cochineal pink, and earth brown is characteristic of the workshops of Dagestan and the Kazak regions, renowned for their intense and luminous colors.
Iconographic composition– Stylized zoomorphic motifs: The central area is animated by stylized bird-shaped figures, alternating between blue, orange, pink, and black. These motifs, typical of Caucasian weavings, traditionally symbolize the protection of the home and family continuity.
– Geometric medallions: The pink and white lozenges, arranged in sequence, refer to ancient symbols of fertility and prosperity, which are very present in the tribal iconography of the Caucasus.
– Multiple borders: The successive borders, adorned with floral and geometric motifs, play a symbolic role of protection: they “enclose” the composition and ward off negative influences, according to Caucasian tradition.
Good overall condition. In some places, the velvet is slightly worn (“rapé”), as visible in the last two photos. The colors remain well-preserved and the structure is solid and stable.
