Black Stone Drawing By Michalek Austria Hrachowina Hungary Master Of Gustav Klimt Refm38
Artist: Ludwig Michalek (1859-1942).
Ludwig Michalek (1859-1942).
Bust portrait of Professor Karl Hrachowina (1845-1896). Black chalk drawing on paper laid down on cardboard, mounted on a stretcher.
The drawing is signed L. Michalek near the middle left, dated 1878, and titled: Prof. Carl Hrachowina Ursgrosvater V patrick M in purple ink at the bottom right. Ludwig Michalek was an Austrian painter, draftsman, and engraver. He is known for his portraits of artists created in his studio.
Here he depicts his colleague and friend, Professor Karl Hrachowina, born in Hungary, himself an artist who taught drawing at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. He was the teacher of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). This finely executed black chalk drawing is covered with graffiti in the right margin. These are experiments with pencil and charcoal density. It exudes a great sense of modernity.
