Bacchus child sculpted in white marble.

The standing, walking, laughing child holds bunches of grapes in his arms. Crowned with vine branches, he exudes infectious joy and youthful vigor.

Signed on the tree trunk "L.Lévêque"

Born on July 1er, 1814 in Abbeville and died on January 6, 1875 in Paris 18e, Edmond Lévêque a French painter and sculptor.

Moving to Paris in 1830, he studied under Sébastien Guersant while also attending classes with David d'Angers and François Rude at the Beaux-Arts. Primarily a sculptor, he took part in the Salon from 1833 to 1874, and sent paintings in 1848, 1869 and 1872.

Many of his works were acquired by the French State, including a Lesbie, now in the Musée de Bernay, and an Andromède, now in the Musée d'Amiens. Two marble figures of a Diana and a Nymph can be seen by him at the Jardin des Tuileries, and a bust of Delphine de Girardin at the Théâtre-Français. He also exhibited in the painting section in 1848, 1869 and 1872.

On April 25, 1861, aged 46, he married Clémence Lecat, of Abbeville, aged 58, in Paris 19e.

Good condition, note a few stains on the marble.
