Georges Rohner (1913-2000) was a French painter trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris after interrupting his secondary studies. Strongly influenced by classical masters such as Ingres, David and Georges de La Tour, he defended a figurative painting based on a return to subject and reality, while rejecting abstraction.
In the 1930s, he exhibited at several prestigious salons and joined the Forces Nouvelles group, which advocated a revival of painting inspired by classical traditions. After a stint in Guadeloupe during his military service, he was mobilized during the Second World War and taken prisoner in Germany.
From the 1940s onwards, he worked as a painter for a number of years.
From the 1940s, having reached full artistic maturity, Rohner devoted himself mainly to landscapes, portraits and still lifes. His work is characterized by a purified representation of reality, stripped of historical, mythological or surrealist references, in order to reveal its full intensity.
Robner's work has been widely acclaimed by the public.
Recognized by critics, he regularly exhibits in France and abroad, notably in London and New York. Today, his works feature in numerous public collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
